Australian Cosmopolitan has banned Nicole Richie from the pages of their magazine this month, as a form of protest against the young star's ever-decreasing waistline. An excerpt from the editor's note this month reads:
"We've never done this before at Cosmo - singled out a celeb for scrutiny. But this month, well, we felt compelled to act.
You know who I'm talking about - the incredible shrinking act that is Nicole Richie. Of course, Nicole is not the first star to shed serious kilos. But she's probably the first to flaunt her thinness so brazenly, and to use the paparazzi to feed the momentum of her unhealthy weight loss. All of us in here at Cosmo felt it had gone too far, and decided to leave her out of the 218 pages of this issue. Just for this month. A small move, but hopefully one that will get us talking differently about the impact unhealthy body issues can have.
Previously, celebs suffering from an eating disorder have tended to avoid the spotlight while they grapple with what is a very private issue. While others openly talk about how they have to work out for hours at a gym or succumb to painful diets to look the way they do. It's cold comfort for those of us who battle to find time to tie on a pair of sneakers, but it puts things into perspective. Gwen Stefani is a prime example - she has (responsibly) gone out of her way to tell fans that she, like other stars, is paid to "work" at her body for hours every day; that it's not normal, and that she wouldn't do it otherwise.
Nicole, though, actively promotes her shocking thinness as a good thing. In fact, this is pretty much all she does right now. "I like being flat," she said recently, referring to the space on her chest where her boobs used to be. "Clothes fit better." To add insult to injury, Nicole flaunts her waste-away figure at every click of the camera. It's like an exponential graph - the more weight she loses, the flimsier her designer shift dress becomes. Here in the office, we laid out a stack of pics of Nicole and analyzed her tactics. It was a fascinating exercise that we wanted to share with you. You see, with every kilo dropped, a layer of clothing came off. Now, she consistently appears in pap shots in clothes that bare her bony back and arms. Add to this the oversize sunnies to amp the "lollipop look" and the way she crosses her feet in photos to emphasize her spindly legs, and we're left with a very clear picture: the girl is a walking billboard for shocking body esteem."
